Morni fort and museum

There is a old fort in the Morni hills area, which is a now in ruins. The morni hills are 
covered by the pine trees and are the popular trekking locations.The fort also has a 
museum built in fy 2017-18.There were two other smaller forts at  the Garhi Kotaha 
and further 5 km at the Massompur village hillock (both in Raipur Rani tehsil of 
Panchkula district), which now lie in the ruins after these were partially demolished 
by the British Raj after the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

The Morni Fort is the modest stone masonry structure built sometime in the 17th 
Century a top the Morni hills at the height of about 1200 metres.The morni fort is 
strategically located and dominates the road to Badiyal towards Sarahan in a 
Himachal, the road to Trilokpur, the ridge road towards Thapli and Mandhana road 
to the Tals. The fort also overlooks the Morni town or  the Bhoj Jabial.

 The morni:The fort has a gate to the East. It has the four towers. The 
accommodation inside the  morni fort was modest and was the augmented in 1814 
when the Raja of Sirmur sought refuge in the  morni fort following his ouster from 
Nahan by the Gurkha invaders. There was a well/reservoir in a center of the morni 
fort (now filled up).The air circulates through the wends in a domes to keep the 
atmosphere cool during summer the months.
Historical References
The morni fort finds a mention in the correspondence of British officers at the time of 
the Gurkha Wars 1815-1816. The morni fort was captured by the Gurkhas and was held
 by a Gurkha commander Gouree Sah until its surrender in 1815.

 The ‘Secret Letters’that formed the part of the ‘Papers regarding the Administration of the Marquiz of Hastings in the India’ that were tabled at a General Court of the ‘United Company of Merchants of England Trading to a East Indies’ on  the 3rd March 1824 included the following letters pertaining to the Morni Fort.
  • A secret letter by the Mr. Rutherford dated 27 Dec 1814 described in detail the information gathered about a strength of the defences at the Morni Fort that was under the Gurkha occupation.
  • The Captain Hearsey is dismissive of the fort as the desribes the vulnerability of the morni hill forts, including the Morni Fort in his the letter dated 27th Dec 1814.
  • A secret letter from the Lord Moira dated 1st June 1815 describes the ‘Agreement entered into between Kajee Ummer Sing Thapa and the Major-General Ochterlony,on the 15th May 1815.
Restoration
The morni fort was in a state of the ruin when the Haryana Forest Department took 
over its a possession in 1977 from the Mirs of Morni fort.

 The bastion in the south-west had a collapsed.A premises were there after used by the Wildlife department for running the Pheasant Breeding Centre until 2006.The fort was thereafter extensively renovated and restored to its original look in 2009.
The Green Curtain
The morni fort is a completely obscured from view from the roadside by the thick 
canopy of the tall Eucalyptus trees that have been planted all along the morni hill top 
on all sides of the fort.

Shiv Temple
The brightly painted Shiv temple stands outside the Eastern Gate and breaks the 
gloom presented by the quiet, deserted the morni fort and the shade of the Eucalyptus 
trees.
